Garrett: Iâll be landing at 2:17. Youâre still picking me up?
Sarah: Make other arrangements.
Her phone immediately lit up with a call from him, but she ignored it.
She went alone to visit Rachel that evening and explained what had happened. Her best friend was flabbergasted. âGarrett seemed so ideal, so open and genuine. I donât understand why he would do this.â
âMe either,â Sarah agreed. âHe promised we would be open about all of our activities and lovers. I told him Iâd be seeing Pawel, and he was perfectly fine with it. I donât understand why heâd lie to me when he had no reason to.â
âImmaturity maybe? Heâs only twenty-seven. Maybe heâs fine with you having other lovers, but heâs not quite secure in the fact youâll be okay with him doing it too.â
âHer profile said theyâre in a D/s relationship,â Sarah added. âThat usually doesnât just happen overnight. Iâm guessing heâs known her for a while.â
Rachel shook her head. âI donât know, but this sucks. I really liked him, too.â
Sarah was numb, unable to produce any tears over the situation. âIâm not sure what to say to him.â
âSo youâre really gonna just strand him at the airport?â
âI didnât strand him,â Sarah fired back. âI told him to make other arrangements!â
âOh,â Rachel laughed, âI would have ditched his ass!â
They both giggled, then Sarah went off to the kitchen to get Rachel a snack. She saw Thomas peeking around the corner wielding a plastic light saber in one hand and a spaceship in the other. He looked forlorn.
His eyes were sad and lonely like a caged puppy. âWhenâs Owen coming back?â
Sarah looked at him empathetically. âI miss him too, but he wonât be back till next week.â
Disappointed, Thomas trudged down the hallway and back to his bedroom.
Gods, I really do miss my boy. Owen was always a shining beacon for their family. He has so much of his grandmother in him. I sure hope Daniel doesnât snuff out any of that light with his cynicism.
As she headed back into the living room with Rachelâs food and drink, her phone vibrated in her pocket. She set the glass and plate down on the end table for her friend before checking the phone to see it was Garrett again. She was suspended on a pendulum, swinging back and forth between âanswer itâ and âignore it.â
âYou canât avoid him forever,â Rachel reminded her.
Sarah pressed the button to accept the call and breathed, âHello,â devoid of inflection, completely neutral.
âWhy arenât you picking me up?â came his tenor voice.
âArenât you already back in town?â Sarah asked, still managing to achieve neutrality.
He was silent. Sarah knew how rare it was for Mr. Navigator to be at a loss for words, so she considered it a bit of a victory. When he did speak, he stumbled over his words like his tongue was too long for his mouth: âHow did you know?â
âSo let me get this straight,â Sarahâs tone grew darker as Rachelâs eyes widened listening to her end of
